Why Proofreading is Critical for Online Businesses

The number of businesses which are choosing to promote their products and services within the online community continues to grow, and for good reason. Not only is it now possible to reach an unheard-of number of potential customers, but establishing such a virtual presence does not require much capital. This is why budding freelancers and entrepreneurs from all walks of life are leveraging what the virtual world has to offer. Still, one of the most frequently overlooked concerns in regards to sales and marketing involves quality content. We are not necessarily referring to strategies such as search engine optimisation (SEO) in this case. We are instead highlighting how a poorly written text can quickly detract from the quality of what would have otherwise been an impressive website. Let’s take a look at this notion in slightly more detail.

More than the “Nuts and Bolts” of Sales Alone

Modern ecommerce software solutions provide website owners with a plethora of options. Some of the most prevalent and useful include:

  • The ability to customise individual pages.

  • Drag-and-drop functionality.

  • Advanced and intuitive payment gateways.

  • 360-degree product images.

  • Real-time customer service solutions.

Unfortunately, proofreading is not included within these tools and utilities. It is therefore ironic that a text laden with errors could very well cause a buyer to look elsewhere even if the remainder of the site is fully functional.

Many so-called marketing “gurus” tend to focus upon more flashy sales and marketing techniques such as the use of social media circles or the concept of multi-channel promotions. However, they have failed to address the simple concept that a well-written section of content could very well represent the deciding factor between further engagement and an individual looking elsewhere. This is when quality comes into play.

Establishing a Reputable and Reliable Online Presence

Not only should content be written for humans as opposed to search engines, but it needs to be edited by a professional in order to ensure that it flows and captivates the reader. Verb usage, the presence of the correct tense, commas, exclamation points, and accurate spelling are only a handful of the factors which a proofreader will take into account.

Still, a flavourful text is really only the beginning. The ability to curate a well-written piece of content tends to silently convey a sense of expertise and authority within a given sector. After all, would you ever take advice from a medically oriented web portal if the embedded text contained a host of misspellings? Of course not. The same holds true in regards to any modern business.

While there is no doubt that advanced e-commerce platforms such as Shopify can work wonders in terms of end-user sales and marketing, it is sometimes necessary to go “back to the basics” in order to ensure that the content itself is written in a professional manner. You will be very surprised to see just how much of a difference such an approach can make in the long run.
